In spite of plenty of impediments I've managed to make some progress.  
All the boards I have (2 BPK, 2 V 1.0, 1 V1.1) work, except for one 
V1.0.  I think it reads ok, but doesn't write reliably, but I would need 
to do more investigating.  Of all the 7110 modules that didn't work 
before, half do now after rewriting their bootloops.  It's possible that 
more could recover after reseeding, but I've put that on a back burner 
for now, along with the one V1.0 board.

Over the past few days I finished getting all the FDOS programs 
working.  There's certainly more work and testing that could be done, 
but at this point all five programs seem to work ok: boot, sysgen, 
format, pip, and fdos - at least nothing obvious or major has been going 
wrong.  Some of them are a lot simpler with the mbm than they were using 
the primitive floppy interface in the book, and could probably be 
consolidated into one program.  The debug facilities in MON85 were 
invaluable during this process.  I could also have used the bus monitor, 
but I've unplugged it for now to reduce the load.  I noticed that it 
doesn't take much of a dip on the 5V to cause trouble with the mbm.

One thing I haven't done yet is decide how to organize all the parts.  
Since the SBC has plenty of ROM space, everything could conceivably be 
kept in ROM, leaving all the RAM for user space.  A small part at the 
tail end of fdos needs to be in RAM, but everything else could be in 
ROM.  I just haven't decided yet how I want to organize it.  Another 
thing I was gong to do was use interrupts for console in.  I thought it 
would be fairly easy since SID can be connected to RST7.5, but the 
signal level is wrong.  The data signal from the max232 would need to be 
normally low but it's normally high.  It would have to go through an 
inverter on the way to rst7.5, and although there are two unused 7404 
gates, I haven't felt like doing that bit of surgery.

The bubble is organized as 64 tracks of 16 blocks each, with one block 
consisting of two mbm pages of 68 bytes.  The first two tracks are 
reserved for fdos, the next two for the directory and bitmap. The 
directory has room for 217 entries, so that space could probably be 
reduced to a single track, leaving room for 105 entries.  I've moved 
most of the console i/o from fdos to a separate file that the other 
programs also use.  I would like to do the same with the mbm code, but 
that's a bigger job.  I've also written a small program, modcaltest that 
I used for some initial testing, and which is still useful for reading 
and displaying mbm data as single blocks using track and sector 
references, rather than mbm pages.

I believe you've been using Herb Johnson's A85 for cross-assembling 
8080/8085 code.  I was also using A85 until I needed to do some Z80 
work.  Then I found a cross-assembler that has support for a wide range 
of processors, so I've switched to using ASL for everything. There isn't 
too much that you would need to change to use A85 instead, mostly things 
like conditional assembly directives.  ASL has a lot of flexibility so I 
found it helpful to use make, which might be another place where some 
changes would be needed.  Besides listings and binary files, the 
makefile also creates intel hex as well as ascii hex files to use with 
the Explorer 85.

I think I'll order another mbm board and an SPIO board, but my budget 
for such things is pretty much exhausted, so that will have to wait for 
a while.  If you're going to make another version of the mbm board at 
some point, I would like to suggest adding an activity indicator.  It's 
always helpful to be able to see if anything is happening.  Something 
else that would be nice, but probably impractical, would be a write 
protect switch.  I remember that all the older storage devices I worked 
on had them.  They were great for peace of mind at various times.

1984.  Well, this much fun with bubble memory and 8 bit computers, anyway.
