Yes, it was incredibly patient. How many others would have just
given up after nearly 40 years? It was a little reluctant though.
A few times it seemed to get into an odd state where the bootstrap
was getting data that seemed to be from somewhere other than the
first pages. The data was apparently an older version of fdos
located at 0xc000, so it appeared valid, but I was suspicious. I
was just about to try using it there anyway when it changed to a
version located at 0xe000, which matched my old printout and notes.
After more checking I took a deep breath and ran the code at
0xe000. When it calmly asked for the date I just looked at it for
the longest time. And again when the "DIR" command came back with a
list of files. It was, as you said, very exciting, almost shocking.
Yes, I think there should be more there. The file dates have fairly
large gaps that don't seem reasonable because I'm pretty sure I
would have been using it regularly. One text file has some binary
data tacked on at the end, and one program runs, but a lot of what
it prints out isn't ASCII. I have very dim memories of thinking
about tracing all the files to try to figure out how to fix things
up. My job at the time took me out of town every week so I only had
weekends to work on this, so I suppose I went back to using
cassettes and never did get the MBM straightened out.
I got them, thanks. I see what you mean about doing the DC-DC
